The California Department of Public Health has released preliminary findings of 2008 cancer cases reported in Carlsbad at a community forum organized by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

Residents had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with representatives from state and county agencies. Officials discussed the work accomplished to date and next steps.

This is the second community forum organized by HHSA to address community concerns regarding cancer cases reported in the Carlsbad area.

After the first forum in late April, HHSA created a task force to facilitate communication with the state. The task force is comprised of community members and County staff, who have gathered information about cancer cases in the Carlsbad community and provided the data to the California Cancer Registry.

The State of California is responsible for analyzing data to determine if a higher number of cancer cases – beyond what is expected – exists in Carlsbad.

HHSA also issued a California Health Alert Network (CAHAN) notice to the medical community to remind them of their legal responsibility to report cases of cancer within six months of diagnosis.
