Information for the reporting of latent TB infection in children and all suspected and confirmed active TB cases is provided below. Discharge plans and procedures are also included.

 Reporting Procedures and Forms

Active TB Cases or Suspects

In accordance with California regulations, all patients with suspected or confirmed active TB disease must be reported to San Diego County TB Control within 24 hours of initial suspicion. Reporting forms may be faxed to (619) 692-5516 or the information called in to (619) 692-8610. For more information, please call (619) 692-8610.

Person with Tuberculosis can get (TB) Medi-Cal

Those persons with TB who have CMS/CI/MCE must be referred to (TB) Medi-Cal. See link for application and information.

Children with Latent TB Infection (LTBI)

Current reporting criteria in San Diego County for individuals with latent TB infection:

  • Child < 2 years old (up to second birthday) with a tuberculin skin test (TST) > 10mm and no BCG vaccination. Please review the child's vaccination history before submitting the report and include it on the CMR.
  • Child < 2 years old (up to second birthday) with a positive interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) test result, (e.g., QuantiFERON or TSpot), regardless of BCG vaccination status.
  • At least two documented TST or IGRA converters, negative to positive, within two years among children in any one household.
  • Child with a TST > 5mm or a positive IGRA and a symptomatic adult has been identified by the reporter.

Confidential Morbidity Report (CMR) may be filled out and faxed to (619) 692-5516. If chest x-ray results are pending, please wait for results before faxing the CMR. If you need to report an active TB case or suspect, please use the Suspect Case Report, not the CMR. Please phone (619) 692-8610 for more information.

Reports of young children with LTBI are used to identify the individual who infected the child. That is, because true LTBI in a child indicates recent transmission, this occurrence can aide TB case finding in our community. Treatment of the child remains the responsibility of the provider. Any information regarding someone with signs or symptoms consistent with TB in the child's environment should be included on the CMR.

Discharge Approval

In accordance with California regulations, hospitalized patients with suspected or confirmed active tuberculosis must have approval from San Diego County TB Control prior to hospital discharge. Discharge care plan forms may be faxed to (619) 692-5516. Instructions are included with the form. Please phone (619) 692-8610 or (619) 540-0194 (cell) for more information.
