Keep ‘Em Safe Program:

The County of San Diego has received funding from the State Office of Traffic Safety to develop a program that will promote the safe transportation of children through a child passenger traffic safety education program that raises awareness and knowledge of child passenger safety geared towards to low income communities, underserved populations, refugees, parents, guardians, and caregivers, as well as to provide child passenger safety education training for Social Workers, Public Health Nurses, and Public Safety Workers.

Background:

Motor vehicle collisions are one of the leading causes of unintentional death and serious injury for children under fifteen years of age, with unrestrained or improperly restrained children being the number one contributing factor.  Motor vehicle occupant injuries and deaths are preventable with appropriate child safety seat and seat belt use, as well as education for parents.  The enforcement of restraint-use laws, such as the use of booster seats for children, is also critical to preventing motor vehicle crash injuries.

Goals and Objectives:

The primary goal of the Keep ‘Em Safe program is to provide services to promote the safe transportation of children, by enhancing child passenger safety through an education program for parents or guardians and child safety seat check up events to promote the proper use of safety seats and seat belts for children of all ages, air bag safety and raise awareness of leaving children unattended in a vehicle.  The program will increase child safety seat compliance, and decrease unrestrained or improperly restrained injuries and fatalities for children, by insuring that all children no matter what their ethnic origin or caregiver’s financial situation have access to federally approved, correctly installed car seats.

For the period of October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011 the Keep ‘Em Safe program provided a total of 1,962 child safety seats have been distributed to 1,612 children, of these 1,231 child safety seats were properly installed by NHTSA certified technicians.  These services are provided at various locations throughout the County.
