Nick Macchione has over 20 years of experience in the planning, management, and delivery of medical care, public health and human services.  As Deputy Chief Administrative Officer and Director of the Health & Human Services Agency for the County of San Diego, he oversees one of the nation’s largest local government-based health and social services networks that supports a county population of over 3 million residents.  With budget responsibility of over $2.0 billion annually, Mr. Macchione manages a diverse workforce of 5,600 employees and 800 contractors that provide direct client services to over 500,000 individuals annually.  He implements policy directives for an elected County Board of Supervisors and directs strategic planning for the county’s health strategy agenda.  Mr. Macchione is involved in a wide range of health and social service programs, such as, public health services, health insurance, mental health, alcohol and drug treatment dependency, emergency medical services and disaster preparedness, employment assistance, programs to protect children and the elderly from abuse and neglect, adoptions and foster youth programs, and numerous early childhood development programs.  In addition, Mr. Macchione oversees the operation of a 45-bed JACHO accredited Psychiatric Hospital and the 192-bed Edgemoor Skilled Nursing Facility.  He is a Commissioner of the First Five Commission of San Diego and serves on numerous regional and national committees.  Prior to becoming the Agency’s Director in June 2008, Mr. Macchione served 10 years as the Agency’s Deputy Director and one year as an executive with the former county department of public health. Mr. Macchione has also worked in the State of New Jersey as Executive Director of a regional health planning organization addressing HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases in a diverse five County metropolitan region.  Throughout his career, Mr. Macchione and his staff have received numerous national, state and local awards for developing innovative, cost-effective reforms in the delivery of health and social services.  He is also a frequent speaker at local and national conferences, as well as, an author of publications relating to health improvement and the use of health information technology in improving access to services.

Mr. Macchione holds dual masters’ degrees from Columbia University and New York University in New York City where he specialized in health services management and health policy.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, having previously served a three-year term as the elected Regent for San Diego and Imperial Counties.  He is a Public Health Leadership Scholar Alumni with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a Creating Healthier Communities Fellow Alumni with the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum.  In addition, for the past 13 years he has been an active faculty member at San Diego State University (SDSU) in the Graduate School of Public Health teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in health care and executive management.  As a tribute to his success as a healthcare executive, faculty member and student mentor, in 2007 he was inducted by the SDSU Graduate School of Public Health as an Honorary Member of Delta Omega of the Sigma chapter, as well as, appointed as the John J. Hanlon Executive Scholar for the Graduate School of Public Health, an endowed position created to further the collaboration between healthcare executives and the academic program in health services administration.
