Cecilia Massa

Fourteen year old Cecilia Massa picked up her mother's bass guitar two years ago and began to teach herself to play -- no doubt the piano lessons she took at age 7 helped her get the hang of it. When she saw a flyer for the Ramona Teen Music Shop she brought her 5-string bass and amp. "It’s nice to have so many other instruments playing together. I learn different bass riffs and how to play with other musicians," says Cecilia. Other musicians include Madison on cajon box drum, Abi on bass, Claire on sax, Emma on guitar, Aaron on clarinet, Eli on electric guitar and Jack on piano. "We are learning how to transpose music; we learn lots of different genres of songs." The Teen Music Shop is working on Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music" and "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream. "Music Shop keeps me practicing," Cecilia explains, "I will be playing at our church for Sunday worship this weekend. To be able to play with others is helpful."

The Teen Music Shop jams in the Community Room at the Ramona Library every Friday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. The library has guitars, amps and an electronic keyboard purchased by the Friends of the Library. Students are encouraged to bring their own gear. The teens teach each other what they know with Library Technician II Mike Voss leading the group. Cecilia's mom Tina helps out too.

So what's in store for Teen Music Shop? "I’d like to learn the riff to “Stray Cat Strut” by Stray Cats," Cecilia says, "and I think we should have a band name and get cool gigs!"
