About the Encinitas Library
"I've never met a more intelligent, on-the-ball staff," Amy Chandler says as she reflects on her first few weeks as Branch Manager of the Encinitas library, "I really love the diversity of the customers, and then of course, there's the view." Located five blocks from the ocean, the Encinitas library is situated on a hill, with an outdoor reading deck that spans the west side of the building, providing customers and staff with a breathtaking view. Over 435,000 customers came in and enjoyed that view last year, and the branch is as busy as ever.
But the library clearly has more to offer than just a striking view. The Encinitas library is the sixth busiest branch in San Diego County Library, with over 630,000 items having been checked out last year. The majority of the items being checked out are adult and children's books, but feature films are also exceedingly popular. The Encinitas library also offers a host of programs that are well-attended by the community and meet a variety of interests. Two open mic programs give customers the opportunity to share their talent with the world and receive feedback. "Words Aloud" focuses on the written word, with writers reading snippets of their latest works. "Encinitas Fresh" is a more typical open mic program where musicians and comics share their latest projects.
Families flock to the branch for free entertainment and educational opportunities for children and teens. Weekly toddler storytimes see attendance of 70-100 people, and the various youth book clubs offer kids and teens a chance to embrace a love of reading while making new friends. Youth Services Librarian, Josh Mitchell, believes that these children's programs are essential and that "by taking advantage of the programs and services that the library has to offer, families are actively participating in the growth and development of their children and their communities."
The Encinitas library is the perfect place to come enjoy good books, fun events, and the serenity of the ocean. For more information on the branch or programs offered, contact staff at (760) 753-7376.
