About the La Mesa Library

Every chair is full at the La Mesa Library, and it stays that way most of the time. Comfortable chairs line the walls of the building, and are full of customers reading the latest magazines and novels, doing homework, or just relaxing with their friends. The La Mesa library moved to a new facility in 2008 they've seen over 600,000 customers set foot in their 10,000-square-foot space since the opening day.

The La Mesa library circulates over 60,000 titles each month, making them one of the top circulating branches in the San Diego County Library system. The bulk of these checked-out items are adult books and movies, which are plentiful in the branch thanks to generous donations of materials purchased by the Friends of the La Mesa Library. The Friends operate a bookstore in the branch and sell donated books other items, giving the proceeds right back to the library. The bookstore is open every day, from 1-4 p.m., a consistent schedule that the community loves.

While the adult materials get checked out the most, the children and teen programs are the most popular with the community. Weekly storytimes usually have 30 to 50 people in attendance, and the teen book club is not only popular in person, but is also available on podcast. The La Mesa library also started an innovative new program called Text Message Reference, giving customers the opportunity to text the library at (619) 928-2251 and ask reference questions.

The La Mesa library might be small, but it embodies the best San Diego County Library has to offer. "Our staff is well-organized, enthusiastic, and knows how to relate to customers in a great way," La Mesa Branch Manager Liz Hildreth boasts. The branch is bright and welcoming, with comfortable spaces for kids and teens. For more information on the services offered at the La Mesa Library, call (619) 469-2151 or visit www.sdcl.org.
