SDCL's Volunteers of the Year: 2013
Jean Benson assists customers in finding materials and staff in everyday jobs such as shelving, paging list, clearing customer holds, and shelf-reading. She assists where there is a need at the Fallbrook Branch. Jean has an amazing talent in graphic design. She creates posters and flyers for various programs at the library. She assists the Children's Librarian in many capacities, including arts and crafts and Art in the Park. Jean also assists the Teen Librarian with activities and crafts. She also works with high school tutors, helping them learn teaching strategies that they can use when working with children.
Robin Johnson has provided over 1,400 hours of assistance at the Borrego Springs Branch, helping customers with computers, straightening materials, preparing for crafts, and checking out books when needed. Robin devotes 12 hours every single week to serving the library users. She also serves on the board for the Friends of the Library and participates in the Friends' book buying committee. Here, she utilizes her comprehensive knowledge of upcoming publications. This makes her an excellent source for Reader's Advisory services, which the staff and customers have come to depend on.
Kathleen Lamb comes in to the San Marcos Branch with a smile and ready to work. She is more than willing to do any task she is asked to do. She is more than able to shelve any library materials. She works extra hours each week hosting a children's bilingual storytime, and assists the children's librarian with collection maintenance.
Raquel Shantal has been a long-time volunteer Spanish instructor and storytime presenter at the Solana Beach branch. She began her volunteering by conducting bilingual story time outreach to Head Start children. Later, when Headstart could visit the library, she hosted the storytimes in the library. When staff was able to take over these visits, she still wanted to volunteer, so she began her Spanish classes for adults seven years ago. Currently, she teaches three adult Spanish classes per week. Her students love her and comment regularly on how wonderful, patient and knowledgeable a teacher she is.
Clementine Whelan works in the Casa de Oro branch, cleaning up the book stacks and shelving books twice a week. She also helps by completing the notice list on Mondays. She has lots of Friends of the Library bookstore experience from the Rancho San Diego branch. She has also been helpful promoting important programs at the branch. When the library was between bookstore volunteers, Clem stepped in and took over, using her Rancho San Diego branch bookstore experience to re-organize the shelves and sort donations. This was a big task, since the branch had been without a regular volunteer to do this job for some time.
Betty Yengst assists with shelving, paging list, stacks maintenance, book drops, periodicals and newspaper maintenance, clearing customer holds and more. From simple shelving to help opening branch, Betty is there to help with everything the library needs. "Super Betty" is a regular-as-clockwork Friday morning volunteer who has been with the Cardiff-by-the-Sea library for a decade. She helps during Friday morning operations, helping enough to allow the staff to conduct staff meetings, as she is covering the morning tasks of filling the paging list and emptying the book drops. Betty provides a consistent presence and excellent judgment in all that she does for the branch. Modest, and elusive, Betty does not seek out the limelight, but her 20 years of service to the library deserve recognition.
