March 5, 6th, and 7th 2010
Vallecito County Regional Park and Stage Station
37349 County Route S-2, Shelter Valley, California
Flyer
This March 5th, 6th and 7th 2010 Vallecito County Regional Park will again become the stage station of the 1850 - 1860’s. This wonderful event is a result of the cooperative effort of both the California State Park and SD County Park staff with The Ramona Trails Association and the Backcountry Horsemen of California - San Diego Unit.
For the past 3 years we have had a magical weekend at the stage station with activities for young and not so young spectators along with equestrians and non equestrians too. This coming year will be even bigger and better with more enterainment on Friday night in addition to the catered dinner and guest speakers on Saturday night. The historical ride on Saturday will retrace the steps of the many travelers who have walked or riden on The Great Overland Mail Route, also called the Southern Immigrant Trail. On Sunday we have a new ride out through Vallecito Valley.
Registration forms will be going out in early January 2010.

What is Adobe U Event Report: The County of San Diego, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) partnered with various organizations and groups to produce a successful volunteer event at Vallecito County Park. The DPR History Program, Volunteer Program, and Operations Division partnered with Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), California State Parks, and Mark Sauer Construction to replaster the interior of the 1850s Vallecito Stage Station. Approximately 40 volunteers braved the cold, rain and icy roads to make it to the park. They all worked very hard with the County Rangers to learn how to care for earthen buildings. Mark Sauer Construction donated a BBQ lunch for all the volunteers as well as the beautiful red mud plaster we used on the interior of the building. We finished four of the five rooms and we are already planning a third Adobe U for Vallecito.
What is Adobe U? A hands-on workshop where the public and parks staff are taught the lost arts of adobe repair and restoration. The goal of Adobe U is to develop a volunteer team of skilled adobe craftsmen, that can be called into action when historic adobe structures throughout the San Diego region are in need, a core group of volunteers that can help to protect and preserve these rare sites. Structures made of adobe, sod, and rammed earth are all earthen buildings, the purpose of Adobe University is to teach people how to properly repair, maintain and care for them. Volunteers leave with a new skill and an appreciation for the construction techniques needed in maintenance of such buildings.
Adobe U last commenced in April of 2009 with over 40 volunteers made the trek out to Vallecito Stage Station, a County of San Diego Historic park on the edge of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. At that time almost the entire structure was given a sacrificial coat of adobe mud and now it’s time to work on the interior.
What we will provide: Gloves • Goggles • Tools • Instruction and Educational handouts • Water, Gatorade and other beverages, and snacks, such as energy bars, fresh fruit, etc. • Mud and Fun
What you will need to bring: Bag lunch to enjoy in the park • Hat • Sunscreen • Long sleeve shirt and clothes that can be stained and ruined
Class size is limited: Please RSVP to Lynne Newell Christenson Ph.D. Historian if you plan to attend (619) 472-2734 • Lynne.Christenson@sdcounty.ca.gov. Due to the limited space, please RSVP only if you are committed to attending the class.
