On Wednesday, April 28, 2004 County Chairwoman Dianne Jacob and the Department of Parks and Recreation hosted a celebration of the reopening of Volcan Mountain Open Space Preserve and some of the hiking trails at William Heise County Park, following last fall's wildfires. The celebration was hosted at Heise County Park in Julian and was followed by a ranger-led interpretive hike on the Desert View Trail. Hikers were treated to a wealth of new growth sprouting on the fire-blackened hillsides. From Humboldt lilies to green shoots of manzanita, evidence of the land's resilience was abundant.

Heise County Park is always on the lists of San Diego's favorite parks, both with residents and visitors. Volcan Mountain consists of more than 2600 acres of oak and pine woodland, chaparral, and grassland, high in the mountains above Julian. Four miles of trails are once again available for hikers' enjoyment at Heise, and trails to the midsummit area at Volcan Mountain Preserve are open to the public seven days a week. Call 760-765-4098 for dates and times of guided hikes to the summit.
