Nocturnal Desert Adaptations

Barona-Kumeyaay Native American Outreach

DEL DIOS HIGHLANDS PRESERVE

This 774 acre preserve straddles the San Dieguito and Escondido Creek Watersheds and provides a 1.4 mile passive trail connection joining the communities of Del Dios and Elfin Forest. The trail is open for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Half way up the trail from the Del Dios Highway staging area, visitors can enjoy an inspiring view of Lake Hodges to the southeast. Further up the trail, the Pacific Ocean can be seen on a clear day. The trail connects with the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve trail system. The preserve is open 7-days a week from 8 am to one half-hour before sunset.

Meet at the amphitheater at the scheduled time. Programs may change or cancel without notice depending upon the weather and ranger availability. The ranger needs at least 10 people for each program to begin, so bring a friend!

Jr. Rangers

Do you like science and nature shows? The Jr. Rangers outdoor education program is based on California Science Standards. We will investigate and explore the rocks, plants, and critters of the park. Don’t forget to bring your Jr. Rangers log book to get credit for participation!

Craft Time
2 pm – 3 pm
Remember how fun it was to sit down and make a cool craft? It still is! Come make a project you can keep. $1 donation per crafter gratefully accepted.

Earth Ball
4 pm – 4:30 pm
Can you imagine a bunch of ants fighting over a grape? Well that’s what we look like when we play with the Earthball. It’s the biggest beach ball you have ever seen! Get exercise and enjoy the game.

Mission Impossible Flashlight

Dos Picos participates in the County’s award winning Discovery Kit Program. Free outdoor education based on California Science Standards for grades K-6th. Ranger visits and more await your school. FREE Haunted Trail Hike

A Spirit Guide will lead you on the haunted trail. This time of year, the woods are filled with spirits and creatures, natural and supernatural. Come join us if you dare! Volunteer ghouls and spirit guides needed! Free admission and free parking in the picnic day use parking lot. Meet at the restroom building where the light is.

Playgrounds, picnic and wedding facilities, open field, horseshoe pits, barbecue grills, and ball field. Picnic and wedding area can be reserved in advance. Park visitors can check out sports equipment (volleyballs and nets, cones,
footballs, flags, softballs, bases, bats, mitts, soccer balls, bocce ball, croquet, ladder golf, frisbees, and hula hoops) with a valid driver’s license.

Enjoy the spectacular views of El Monte Valley and El Capitan from the newly dedicated 4.1 mile, El Monte Trail. Park approximately 100 yards west of the park entrance, north of El Monte Road.

Wednesday night roller hockey is geared for players that are 30 years of age or older. This is a recreational league where many players throughout other leagues come to have fun. Skill levels vary and are balanced amongst teams. Players are permitted to play on various teams to aid lacking players, and give the ability for all teams to compete. Thanksgiving Walk with Park Ranger

Camp with the Stars

Patrol Volunteers Needed
Hikes are led monthly on every 3rd Saturday at 9 am from the preserve parking lot. Ranger-led hikes and interpretive talks are available to groups upon request. For a safe, rewarding hike, we ask you to bring water, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt and pants, sturdy hiking shoes, snack foods, binoculars and camera. Hikes at Hellhole can be strenuous, and temperatures can get very hot.

Nature Hike

Take a relaxing and easy hike at Lake Morena Regional County Park. During the hike you will learn about native plants in the area, and how the Kumeyaay Indians utilized the natural vegetation in their daily lives. You will also learn the history of Lake Morena. The hike lasts about an hour. Free of charge for the public. Parking is $3 for those not camping at Lake Morena.

Stelzer Park Guided Nature Walk
First Saturday of the Month
10 am – 11:30 am
Join us at the Ranger Station for a 90-minute led walk along a 1 ¾ mile loop trail. This is an easy to moderate hike on an unpaved, yet well maintained trail. We will travel along an open hillside with views of Stelzer Ridge and Wildcat Canyon, and then return through the shaded Oak and Sycamore lined trail along Stelzer Creek. Free of charge for the public.


MT. GOWER PRESERVE

Trails are reopened for horse riding and hiking on foot. Witness the recovery of the landscape since the preserve was damaged by the Cedar Fire in 2003 – the incredible views are still intact! Use caution in some areas where trail washouts still exist. Primitive campsites are avail­able (with a restroom nearby) – a great place for scouting events and outdoor gatherings.

Nature Walk

Second Saturday of the Month

Join us for a naturalist-led nature walk through Oakoasis Preserve. This will be a great time to explore this well named natural park. We will walk on a moderate 3-mile loop trail that will travel through lands still in recovery from the 2003 Cedar Fire. Half way through the walk, we will enter the oasis of preserved oak trees and boulders. Free of charge for the public.


PINE VALLEY PARK

Pine Valley is a day use park with three reservable picnic areas on 17 acres. Much of the park is covered by lawn, tall pine trees, and broad oaks. Recreational activities include ball fields, tennis courts, shuffleboard, horseshoes, and playgrounds.


POTRERO PARK

Potrero Regional Park offers RV, tent, and group camping. Groups including corporate campouts can use developed and primitive sites and can reserve a picnic area. Hot showers are available for campers staying at one of the 39 RV sites, which have electrical hook-ups and water, or at one of the tent sites. There is a holding tank disposal station near the campground. Much of the 115-acre park consists of picnic areas. Visitors can also enjoy ball fields, an
enclosed pavilion, playgrounds, and hiking trails.

Dia de los Muertos at Guajome

Celebrate a 3,000 year old tradition where the dead return home to visit loved ones in spirit, feast on their favorite food and drink, and listen to their favorite music. The historic Rancho Guajome Adobe will have offerings to remember the dead and honor ancestors, which may consist of food, photography, flowers, candles, toys, and other symbolic offerings created by community members. The event will include performances by ballet folklorico, live traditional music, and children’s activities, along with food and craft vendors. Fees: $2 for adults 13 and older, $1 for children (ages 4-12), free for children under 3. 

Rancho Christmas

Using natural materials, each of the 28 rooms and 2 large courtyards will be decorated for the holiday season. Children will delight in the variety of hands-on arts and crafts with paid admission. Activities include cornhusk dolls, dipping apples in caramel, and yarn weaving. Enjoy live music, dancing, and storytelling. On Saturday evening only, complimentary hot cider will be offered as we gather in the inner courtyard for caroling by the warm glow of luminaries. $5 for adults (13 and older); $3 for children (ages 4-12); free for children 3 and under.  

Self Guided Tours

School Tours
Teachers can arrange school tours for their 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders by calling the park office. Tours must be arranged at least one month in advance. The Adobe Tour includes a brick-making activity with a ranger at the conclusion of the tour. School groups are also welcome to stay and utilize the park’s outdoor picnic venue. $1/student.

Docents meet at the park office to sign-up for tours, plan events, socialize, and participate in the preservation of our historic adobe. Join us to learn how you can become a docent!

Trails/Native Garden
During daylight hours, visitors can hike, ride, or bike along the park’s multi-use trail, which connects to the adjacent City of Vista Sports Park. Also, take time to smell the native flowers that will be in bloom starting in February in the Native Plant Garden, just south of the historic Adobe.

San Dieguito is a 125-acre park located in Del Mar and is home to the Miracle Field, a fully accessible baseball field that accommodates children and adults with special needs. San Dieguito offers a variety of recreational activities

Family Discovery Days Not So Scary Estuary

Meet the hooting nocturnal animals this Halloween season while enjoying fun arts and crafts for the kids. Prowl through our bat cave display, or go trick-or-treating along the loop trail. You’ll learn secrets about native owls, spiders, bats, and other critters that “spirit” the lagoon after sunset and discover they’re not so scary after all. Event is free with a suggested donation to cover craft materials.

Let our Park Rangers introduce your child to the wonders of birding. Your child will learn the basics in bird identification with the aid of a field guide and binoculars. Cost is $15 per child and includes a field guide and observation notebook. Advance registration required; parent must accompany children. Please bring a hat, binoculars, sunscreen, water, snack, and wear appropriate shoes. Binoculars available for purchase for $15 each.

Family Discovery Days Migration Celebration

Join us as we celebrate the arrival of our feathered friends at San Elijo Lagoon, where over 300 different bird species grace our waters every winter! The event will include live children folk music, face painting, bird-themed crafts, hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. Kids will enjoy learning about migration, different types of adaptations, and how to recognize some of the more common birds. Trained naturalists will have spotting scopes and binoculars
available for everyone to use at the Nature Center and along the loop trail. Event is free with a suggested $1 donation to cover craft materials. Parking is limited, so please carpool if possible.


SANTA MARGARITA PRESERVE

This 221-acre preserve has a nice equestrian-friendly staging area and 1.5-miles of multi-use trails great for horseback riding, hiking and bird watching. To the north the trails connect with 11-miles of trails owned by the Fallbrook Public Utility District. The preserve is open 7-days a week from 8 am to one half hour before sunset. In the event of rain the preserve will not open for at least 24-hours.

The Spring Valley Children’s Universal Language Orchestra is a collaborative project focusing on creative expression through music and the related arts. Doctoral students from UCSD will share their passion for music and work with groups of elementary school-age children. No prior music experience necessary. Participants will build instruments out of everyday objects, and learn about making music as a group, and collectively create a unique musical performance for the general public. Classes are open to children ages 7-12. Fee is $25 per child.

Breakfast with Santa

Children and their families can enjoy a special morning with Santa Claus. Activities include an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, caroling, and a special visit with Santa. $4 for children under 12. $5 for ages 12 and up.

Winter Camp

Week Two: Tuesday, January 2 – Friday, January 6 (7 am – 6 pm)
Enjoy two weeks of fun during the holiday break. Winter camp consists of games, holiday crafts, and much more. Ages 5-14 are welcome. Resident per week, per child, $70; Non-resident per week, per child, $75.

Youth Open Play

To participate, youth must bring the release form packet completely filled out and signed by a parent or guardian. This form puts your child on the open play checklist, where the child must check in every day they participate. Kids under 10-years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Children must where gym appropriate clothing. No jeans. Age requirement is 17 and under. Free for all youth.

Adult Open Play

No jeans. To check out equipment, adults must bring a form of personal identification such as a driver’s license. Cost is $1/day or $20/year for an annual pass. Age requirement is 18-years and older.

Gymnasium Rental
To make a request for rental, you can call the gym, e-mail us, or stop by our office to fill out an interested user group form. All requests for gym rentals must be made 30-days or more in advance to be considered. Give 1-2
days to process request. If approved, you will be issued a facility permit. If you are renting for a tournament, a $250 deposit is due immediately and balance is due by Friday at 5 pm before the tournament, along with a copy of your liability insurance. If you cancel within 30-days, your deposit is non-refundable.

Youth Basketball League

Looking for a great weekend activity for your kids? Join the Spring Valley Gym for our Youth Basketball League. With over 200 kids in the last session, this league brings in all types of skills and experience. You don’t need to have experience to play because this is a recreational league for all skill levels. 8 games plus playoffs. 4 Divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-14 years old). Registration opens December 1. To register a copy of birth certificate is required. Cost is $60 per child.

Ninety-Minute Nature Walk
First Saturday of the month, 8 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Join us for a ranger-led 90 minute walk along the 1 ½ mile Woo­ten Loop – Riparian Trail. An easy to moderate hike on an unpaved, yet maintained trail. Enjoy views of Stelzer Ridge and Wildcat Canyon and return through the shaded oak- and sycamore-lined trail along Stelzer Creek. Please bring water and wear comfortable shoes.

Oakoasis Nature Hike
Every second Saturday of the month, 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., join us for a Ranger-led hike through this beautiful preserve. Travel along the 2 1/2 mile loop to see how well the plants are recovering from the 2003 wildfires. Enjoy the shade of the majestic oaks and the wonderful views. Bring water and comfortable hiking shoes. Meet at the Oakoasis parking lot.

Star Hike

Introduction to Geocaching

Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt where people use a hand held GPS device to find a hidden container, usually containing a log book and small trinkets. This phenomenon has grown to a world-wide level now available in every corner of the planet. This is your chance to experience the sport in the only County Park where it is allowed. This program is aimed at guests who have never played the sport and would like to learn more about it. A slideshow and discussion in the Visitor Center will be followed by Geocaching in the park. It is recommended guests bring their own GPS unit as the number available from staff is limited. Two new Geocaches will be placed for this event, celebrating the changing of seasons! Scavenger Hunt

Do you love the outdoors? Are you good at following clues and solving puzzles? Join Park staff for a self-guided, scavenger hunt designed specifically for children. Kids will have a chance to follow clues and find various points in search of the final treasure. Wildlife Bingo

Bingo! Join Park staff for a chance to play a fun game while immersing yourself in our local plant and animal wildlife. The game will give children a chance to seek out several species of our local plant life as well as our furry, scaly,
and feathered friends. Participants will be given a bingo card containing pictures and it will be the child’s task to locate and cross off each item on their card in an attempt to get bingo! Star Party

Join SDAA volunteer astronomers and park staff at the Hwy 67 staging area for a night with the stars. Come experience the chance to view Jupiter, Leo, Orion, and even the Winter Milky Way. We promise you will be wowed by this star experience. Bring sturdy shoes and a jacket. Flashlights are not recommended as they can interfere with the sensitive equipment. Racers and Chasers Bike Race

At Vallecito, the perfect oasis of "little valley," as its Spanish name is translated, has been preserved as a 71-acre county park built around a reconstruction of the historic Butterfield Stage Station. Vallecito has been a campsite for  hundreds of years, beginning first with the native Kumeyaay Indians. Vallecito is a quiet alternative to some of the busier desert campgrounds. One attraction is the weather, which averages about 10 degrees cooler than nearby Agua Caliente.
