Work Furlough Program

The Probation Department contracts with Correctional Alternatives Incorporated to house inmates in the Work Furlough Program. Work Furlough is a sentencing alternative for judges that allows inmates to maintain employment while serving jail commitments when their work day is completed. Work Furlough inmates are considered low risk to community safety.

Requirements
As a participant in the Work Furlough Program, you will be allowed to check out of the facility to go to work. The program enables you to keep your current job, while serving custodial sanctions.

You will be required to return to the facility each day as soon as your workday is completed. The majority of inmates are required to take public transportation; however, some inmates are approved to drive with proper documentation. You can also attend school, religious services, and programs like SB38, First Conviction Program, Anger Management and other court-ordered counseling. Programs offered on-site include Alcoholics Anonymous/ Narcotics Anonymous. Your family and friends will be able to visit you at the Work Furlough facility on the weekends.

Employment Criteria
You must be gainfully employed at least 35 hours per week in an occupation that lends itself to routine telephone and on-site job checks. Employers must allow on-site job checks and telephone checks by Work Furlough staff.

  • Your job must not be directly related to the instant offense
  • Your job cannot involve the use of weapons
  • Your job cannot involve acceptance of personal checks or access to personal information (i.e. social security numbers, banking information)
  • You must be able to work legally in the United States
  • Your job needs to be in San Diego County
  • The facility operates twenty-four hours a day; therefore, we can accommodate varied work hours
  • The maximum allowable amount of work hours is 72 hours per week

Your attorney should call the Work Furlough Program at (619) 232-8600 for employment screening. If your case is a felony, then your attorney must also call the Probation Department at (619) 574-5601 for formal screening. If you appear to be eligible, your attorney can ask the Judge to sentence you to Work Furlough instead of jail. The San Diego County Probation Department has the final authority over the placement of inmates into the Work Furlough Program.

Criminal History Criteria
Any defendant facing a local custody commitment may be a candidate for Work Furlough. The Probation Department's Work Furlough Oversight unit will evaluate each case on an individual basis for eligibility. In making its determination, the Oversight unit will analyze the instant offense and consider the defendant's criminal history. The presence of the following factors may make an individual ineligible:

  • Sale or transportation of large amounts of drugs or narcotics in the instant offense or a recent history of serious drug involvement or addiction.
  • History of assaultive and/or violent behavior
  • History of use of a weapon
  • History of serious mental illness
  • Offenses resulting in the loss of substantial amounts of money.
  • Sex offenses (a record of sex crimes will call for closer scrutiny during the screening process due to the increased risk posed to the community by sex offenders.)

Financial Obligations
The fee is $42.00 a day and a payment plan will be prepared the day you report for custody.

It is recommended you bring a deposit of $300.00 to place on the books on or before the day you report to the Work Furlough Program. The deposit will help you stay current and help you avoid falling behind in your financial obligation.
