RIVERWAY TRAILS PLAN

EQUESTRIAN GROUP MEETING – COMMENTS RECEIVED

July 17, 2003

1.                  Staging Area Needs

·         One-way system for trailers

·         Fewer trailers needed if there are connections to other trails; unless the trail connects to a longer trail system it’s not worth using a trailer

·         Use horse gates for access

·         Parking needed for 5 or 10 trailers

·         Pine Valley might need 20 trailers

·         Parking lots - natural dirt or decomposed granite surface

·         Valley Falls staging area has 5 feet behind and to either side of trailer for each stall

·         If have dumpsters, people will scoop horse manure

·         Restroom in staging area

·         Water

2.         Amenities Needed Along Trail

·         Designate water for horses/humans

·         Traffic noise on Channel Road bothers horses

·         Irrigation sprinklers startle horses

·         Palm Row – Needs a sign that prevents riders from entering soft shoulders

·         Picnic tables

·         Use split rail to separate trail for horse – they sense the barrier

·         Need to ensure that all users acknowledge hierarchy and yield appropriately

·         High-speed bike plan?

·         Signs should be at least 4’ in height and placed 3-4’ back from trail

3.         Route & Linkages

·         Connection to Sycamore Trail

·         Many Eucalyptus Hills people could use Palm Row for access

4.                  Existing Good Examples

·         Mission Gorge –good example of trails staging

·         Moreno is a series of ranches…

·         Cuyamaca Ranch Estate Park – multi-use trail; yield hierarchy

·         For trail routes used, contact:

Teresa Bitondo (619) 443-7210

Gail Sabbadini (619) 443-7166

5.                  Trail Maintenance and Funding

·         Willing to volunteer

·         Have a volunteer that knows grant writing

·         Willing to volunteer with tree planting and trail maintenance

·         Would be willing to have fund raisers to raise money

·         Sell fishing permits for money

6.                  Miscellaneous

·         Would like a site visit to view the trail alignment
